Social Justice and the Environment

Over the past weeks we have had several opportunities to meet with students and faculty from Kadambari College’s School of Social Work.  Students in that program, like our Camosun students, apply classroom learning and academic studies with community based practicum placements.  On Wednesday we were given tours of two community sites by Social Work students Dipina and Ujjwal.
One of our visits was to an organization called YES (Youth Engagement in Sustainability), a youth led environmental group composed of volunteers who are passionate about educating youth and community about green practices.  They have undertaken many projects including informing citizens about the use of CFL lighting, staging a ‘green’ concert (acoustic instruments and nothing requiring electricity) and offering a 6 month service learning course to local youth. The number and variety of projects that this group has undertaken with minimal resources is remarkable.  Their concern for the environment, health, social justice, citizenship, social capacity and citizenship are linked to employment, entrepreneurship, education and equity.  The mission and values of the organization are enacted through all of its practices including its organizational and decision making structures and individual acts of environmental improvements.  One of the leaders told us that it was his 26th birthday and that he was going to celebrate by planting 26 trees!
