Yesterday students began their community practicum placements. We all piled into a bus and drove through the neighbourhood, dropping students off as we went.
Isha, Tina, and Sarah are at the Samakosi English Boarding School (SEB). Steph, Gerrit, and Amanda are at the Himalayan School for Helpless Children. Their main focus will be supporting children in the classroom.
Stephanie and Caroline will be spending their time at a day care centre in the neighbourhood. This is the same centre that Rob and Gillian, students from the 2009 field school, worked at the last time we were here. They worked with youth connected to our host organization and assisted in refurbishing the building. This time, Stephanie and Caroline’s focus will be working directly with the children.
It was great to watch this beginning and to see them return at the end of the day. Emotions by day's end included excitement, relief, and anxiety. How else could the first day be?
